If you were in a club anywhere in the world in 2007, you were probably dancing to many tracks helmed by Timbaland, who Allmusic rightfully called “the reigning producer of R&B and rap since 1996.” For his second solo album, the producer extends past the R&B, rap and pop he made his name on for a star-studded musical gumbo featuring a mind-blowing array of guests. “Timbaland can do whatever he wants,” Rolling Stone wrote at the time. “Everyone and your grandmother wants to work with him. And on Shock Value, almost everyone does.”
Missy Elliott, Dr. Dre (“Bounce”), Justin Timberlake, Nelly Furtado (“Give it to Me”) and 50 Cent (“Come and Get Me”) dominate the album’s first half of thumping, futuristic tracks that soundtracked your favorite night out. From there, the uber-producer upends rock with collaborations with Fall Out Boy, the Hives and She Wants Revenge before closing with the mournful yet propulsive smash “Apologize” with OneRepublic and a freewheeling coda with Elton John on “2 Man Show.” The album went platinum that year for good reason, with the producer showing why he’s still untouchable.
